How to Thrive, Not Just Survive, in the Winter Hustle

As we approach the final chapter of 2024, the days grow shorter, and our diaries seem to grow fuller. Not long ago, society honoured the natural rhythm of the seasons, slowing down as the light waned. Winter was a time to align with the yin energy of rest, a contrast to the yang energy of summer’s activity. Today, however, the pace and expectations ramp up as we head into the holiday season with stacked social calendars and race to meet end-of-year deadlines - leaving many of us feeling disconnected and depleted just when our bodies and minds crave a slower rhythm.

The weeks between now and the holidays offer an opportunity to rewrite the script. By embracing the natural energy of the season and prioritising taking care of ourselves, we can close the year on a high note. Being intentional in our approach allows us to step into the holidays feeling grounded and present rather than burnt out and using that time just to recover from the lead-up. Here are a few simple yet impactful practices to support your wellbeing and slow down for this season:

Take a pause before committing

When someone asks if you’re free for a holiday party or another night out, it’s tempting to immediately check your diary and see if there’s a gap. Instead, try responding with, “Let me get back to you by the end of the day (or tomorrow)”.

This pause creates space for you to step out of the relational dynamic and truly consider if you have the space energetically. It’s a small but powerful way to be mindful of your output and ensure you’re saying yes to what truly matters (be that rest, connection or joyous fun).

Create your own winter rituals

Inspired by my dear friend from Norway, I’ve adopted the practice of lighting candles in the morning during these darker months. A favourite of mine is RAIN's Candle 01 which is great for relaxation and slowing down. The soft glow of candlelight paired with warm, gentle lamp lighting (if you require more brightness) helps create a calming atmosphere that allows you to ease into the day and set a grounding tone to carry with you.

Carve out dedicated time for slow activities like reading

Reading is one of my favourite ways to reconnect with the season’s more inward, quiet energy. At this time of year, I highly recommend Wintering by Katherine May. This beautifully written book helps provide perspective on slowing down and serves as a guide to embracing the restorative energy of the season.

Lean towards warming foods

In the colder months, our bodies naturally crave warmth and grounding and one dish I turn to weekly is dal. From an Ayurvedic perspective, Winter is considered a kapha and vata season, characterised by cold, dry, and heavy qualities. A dish like dal (here’s my easy go-to recipe), which is warm, moist, and spiced, helps balance these energies. Dal, which means “lentils” in Hindi, is a spiced lentil stew that has been a cornerstone of Indian cuisine for centuries. It is not only a rich source of protein, fibre and minerals, but it also traditionally uses spices that provide medicinal benefits (supporting digestion, immunity, and more).

Incorporate these practices to slow down in the holidays amidst the busy Winter hustle. If you need extra support to get through the end-of-year peak, incorporate Flow State Mushrooms into your routine for sustained energy and focus, without the jitters and crashes from coffee.
